There has been a lot in the press recently about a particular type of artificial breast implant (PIP, Poly Implant Prothese).
Concerns have been raised that the materials used in the manufacture of these implants were either inferior, defective or both. Some implants have ruptured which may lead to infection of the lymph nodes.
PIP, a French company, supplied implants for around 50,000 women in the UK but whereas the French Health Products Safety Agency now advises that it can no longer exclude the possibility that the silicone used in the implants may have long term toxic effects the organisation responsible for licensing such products in the UK, the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) states that it has no evidence to link the implants with cases of ill-health particularly cancer.
As matters stand any woman who is concerned about the risks e.g. where there has been a seepage of the gel and a consequent risk of infection will have to pay to have the implants removed.
If you or someone you know has had breast enlargement surgery using the PIP implants and are worried or concerned that you may suffer ill-health as a result, you should seek legal advice as a matter of urgency.
