Civil Partnerships For Opposite-Sex Couples To Be Introduced By End Of 2019

The government has announced plans to extend civil partnerships to opposite couples in England and Wales by the end of 2019. As a result, opposite sex couples will now have the choice of either picking a civil partnership, which brings the same legal rights as marriage, or tying the knot.

This will come as a welcomed change to those couples who do not wish to marry but believe that a civil partnership better fits their ideologies whilst maintaining the same legal status.

The Government Equalities Office has launched a consultation to gauge public opinion on whether married couples can convert into a civil partnership. The consultation welcomes responses until 20 August 2019.
