Unusual insurance claims revealed

The annual report from Norwich-based insurance company Aviva has illustrated some of the more unusual claims reported by their customers during 2020.

These have included a driver whose car was bombarded with potatoes, as the tractor pulling a trailer in front of him took a bend just a little too quickly, leaving the car driver to note that “there were no injuries but there were some chips from where the potatoes had hit the car”.

A policyholder whose car was hit by tiles from his own roof, which had in turn been dislodged by a low flying drone – and a lady who panicked when a spider ran up her leg whilst she was driving leading to her colliding with a parked car.

Whilst these are certainly more unusual circumstances, in the words of a well-regarded and very senior judge, “the categories of negligence are never closed”.

So if you have suffered injury in unusual circumstances where the accident was not your fault, or even if you are unsure as to whether it was your fault or not, you may be able to pursue a claim.
