Duncan Brown

Head of Employment / Senior Associate

Duncan heads our Employment team as part of our Business & Commercial department, and has over 25 years’ experience in civil, employment and property disputes, as well as personal injury claims.

He is experienced in advising both employees and employers, and his background in Employment Law includes advising employers on absence management, assisting employees on exit negotiations, and teaching Employment Law to trainee solicitors.

How Duncan can help you

Duncan has experience of Group Legal Actions, including advising large groups of employees being made redundant, at the same time, by the same employer. He has acted for numerous clients whose legal fees have been paid by their Legal Expenses Insurers.

He qualified as a solicitor in September 1999 and joined Fosters Solicitors in March 2024. He has worked at law firms across Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex, and spent time in London, acting in high-value catastrophic injury claims, as well as advising European clients on Employment Law.

His style is to be upfront with clients and is a firm-believer in straight-talking. He really enjoys building a rapport with clients, and getting to know the workings of his commercial clients’ businesses so that he can create a close working and effective relationship with them.

He has been an employer and has friends and family with their own businesses. So, he appreciates, first hand, the demands, frustrations and risks of running a business and employing people. He enjoys advising employers on how to reduce their risk/exposure to legal disputes.

About Duncan

Duncan grew up in East Anglia, living in Norfolk as a young child. Prior to training as a solicitor, he was a civil servant. He obtained his Law degree from the University of Birmingham in 1994 and has specialised in legal disputes since he qualified.

He trained at a well-regarded law firm in Suffolk and has been a Partner at a Suffolk law firm, as well as a Director of a niche London law firm which specialised in advising European clients.

Duncan was a visiting lecturer at the University of Law, where he taught undergraduates, trainee solicitors and trainee barristers.

He is married and spends most of his free time with his two young daughters. He enjoys ‘all things cinema’, including World War II films and ‘low-rent’ zombie dramas! A ‘fresh air fiend’, he loves walking his family’s two dogs and the summer when he can swim, cycle and relax at the seaside. He speaks business German and French.
