Norfolk nurse named NCFC Community Hero

In association with our partners, Norwich City Football Club, this month’s Fosters Solicitors Community Hero is Kate Stanton from the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, chosen by the club’s matchday charity partner Amber’s Army.

Kate was present during a big part of former Canaries’ Fan of the Season, Amber Sheehy’s cancer journey, who many Norwich City fans will recognise as the 2021/22 winner, receiving thousands of votes.

Amber sadly lost her battle in 2022 at age eight, but her memory lives on through the Amber’s Army charity, set up by her parents, Amanda and Jon Sheehy.

The pair describe the Paediatric Oncology Nurse Specialist as “a good person and the most consistent nurse through Amber’s journey.”

Kate also regularly came back to visit Amber when she was in hospice care.

They continued: “When we were asked to nominate someone to be a community hero, there was really only one person who came to mind, it had to be Kate.

Kate’s role as a Paediatric Oncology Nurse Specialist involves offering emotional support, information, and practical advice from the time of diagnosis, throughout the course of treatment and afterwards to those children and families following a cancer diagnosis.

On being nominated, she said: “I am truly honoured to have been chosen by Amanda and Jon Sheehy.

The Sheehy family have gone through such a journey in their fight against cancer and I am in awe of the bravery and courage they have shown.

To go on to set up the Amber’s Army charity in memory of Amber, supporting other families following a terminal cancer diagnosis to make memories and offer emotional support in those dark days, is truly admirable.

Amber was a pleasure to care for throughout her treatment.

Her resilience, bravery and courage shone through.

One of my last memories was the delight she had in telling me all about the memories she was making and the wonderful experiences.

Her little face lit up showing me all the photos.

Kate, born in Norfolk, will be attending her first ever football game on Saturday, despite being surrounded by Norwich City supporters her whole life and being married to one.

I am very proud to be going to the game and thank the Sheehy family for their kind nomination. They are the real heroes.

Since 2019, Fosters Solicitors have joined our primary partners Norwich City Football Club in highlighting the great work of local individuals and organisations in our community. Every month during the football season, a ‘Community Hero’ is chosen for a selected matchday – providing an opportunity to showcase that person(s), or initiatives, selfless work or important community campaign.

Do you know someone who deserves special recognition, or does something wonderful for their local community? If so, we’d love to hear your nomination for a future game, which can be put forward via the club’s website.
